Do's & don'ts for websites

Avoid moving images or sliders

There are a lot of websites with moving sliders. No matter how beautiful this may look, you should preferably avoid it. Moving images on a website are too distracting for the visitor. A slider is also often used as a hero (banner) on a home page and that is actually a waste of the valuable space you waste with it. Often those moving images do not contain useful information.

Long texts are not necessarily more valuable

The majority of people looking for information online are impatient. This is also because you read about 25% slower on screens than on paper. Per webpage, you preferably also actually have between 350 and 500 words. You keep it relatively short, concise and, above all, relevant. Use also call to actions (CTAs) to other pages, such as for example the contact page. Note: in some branches, it may sometimes be necessary to place more text, but then you may never exaggerate.

"Keep it simple and stupid"

Do not make the navigation of your website too complex. People often think the more menu items, the more professional, but nothing is less true. The fewer people have to look around on your website, the better you have thought about it. You have to think about your visitors in the first place. Less is more!

Don't hide information

On the one hand, this is important for your transparency, but on the other hand, it is close to the point above. There are no hard rules here, but preferably visitors must click a maximum of 3 times to find information on your website. Think carefully about a clear menu structure and position your CTAs strategically.

Do not make contact forms too long

Keep your contact forms as accessible and short as possible. Long contact forms deter visitors. Unless it is necessary, just ask the name and first name, the address and possibly a telephone number.

Create trust with a secure website

Non-secure websites are not only punished in search engines, but they also scare off potential visitors. The visitor estimates a secure website higher and the threshold for entering personal data or for placing an order is also smaller.

Have external links open in a new tab

It is best to open links that lead to external websites in a new tab. This is to keep visitors on your website. If the visitor clicks away from the external website, he will immediately return to your website. So the ability to entice him to come to you is retained.

Link to your social media

The link to social media on your website creates extra confidence with the visitor. Of course only if you also effectively post messages on social media. It shows that you are up-to-date, accessible and therefore more credible.

Do not think that your target group does not surf mobile

The time when mobile surfing was mainly associated with young people has long gone. Parents and grandparents are also familiar with smartphones and tablets. And yes, they also search online for information! So if your website is not yet mobile-friendly, then it is time that you do something about it.

Don't put thoughtless pop-ups on your website

Pop-ups can work in some cases, but it is important that you do not disturb visitors to your website. It is best to think in advance if the pop-up is necessary and if you cannot place the information elsewhere. Thoughtless pop-ups are often considered annoying.
